Description
One of The Atlantic’s Great American Novels of the Past 100 Years
First published in 1959, The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson is widely regarded as a masterpiece of unnerving terror. This iconic novel follows four seekers who arrive at the infamous Hill House, a place with a notorious reputation for being haunted: Dr. Montague, an occult scholar seeking proof of supernatural phenomena; Theodora, his witty and carefree assistant; Eleanor, a fragile and isolated young woman with a history of poltergeist experiences; and Luke, the future heir to Hill House. What begins as a seemingly innocuous stay to explore the house’s eerie reputation soon turns into something far darker as the house begins to exert its influence. Soon, Hill House will choose one of them to claim as its own.

Pristine condition, delivered on time, considered one of the greatest books of fiction, of all time.

Beautifully written, no doubts there. The prose seems to open up and wrap around you and pull you into the story. It’s not outright scary, I thought for sure there would be more ghostly activity but I enjoyed the story nonetheless.

I read this book on the recommendation of an author friend who loves gothic literature, and I was not disappointed. I was already a fan of Shirley Jackson based on her short stories, as well as “We Have Always Lived in the Castle.” Her style is captivating, and you are never quite sure where things will go in her unnerving narratives. Not scary, but super creepy. I would never want to live in one of her stories, but they sure are fun to visit.
