In this raw and darkly humorous memoir, Jennette McCurdy—star of iCarly and Sam & Cat—shares her harrowing journey as a former child star. From eating disorders and addiction to her complex relationship with her overbearing mother, McCurdy recounts how she regained control of her life.
Description
Jennette was just six years old when her mother pushed her into acting, determined to make her a star. What followed was a life shaped by “calorie restriction” and relentless pressure, including daily weigh-ins and makeover sessions. Her mother, who even bathed her until she was sixteen, also monitored her diaries, emails, and income.
In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette opens up about the dark side of fame—how landing a role on iCarly brought her no joy, only anxiety, shame, and self-destructive habits. These struggles deepened as she took on a lead role in Sam & Cat alongside Ariana Grande, until the death of her mother. After her mother’s passing, Jennette found therapy, quit acting, and began her journey of healing, finally discovering what she truly wanted in life.
With candidness and wit, I’m Glad My Mom Died is a story of survival, independence, and reclaiming joy—even in the most difficult circumstances.

This is a fantastically written book and I’m proud of Jeannette for writing it. As someone raised by a narcissistic mother, I was deeply saddened by this book. My hopes for the book was to be able to find someone to relate to, however my journey and Jeanette’s journey were very different. I saw through my mom’s ploys and broke away from her at a very young age. It broke my heart to hear Jeannette unfortunately held onto her relationship with her mom until the very bitter end. I was hoping the book would end in a better place. It seems like it was cut off too soon. There’s definitely a lot more healing that needs to happen by the end of the book, so maybe she’ll write a part 2 once she’s further along on her healing journey.

I had a very hard time putting this book down after opening it. It felt relatable & oddly comforting to know there’s people out there who have developed people-pleasing due to their parents. I think this book is a great read. I love how eloquently she told her story & shared her healing process, including the good, bad & the ugly. I’d highly recommend reading this book.
