THE #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
“You will not read a more important book about America this year.” — The Economist
“A riveting book.” — The Wall Street Journal
“Essential reading.” — David Brooks, New York Times
Hillbilly Elegy is a heartfelt and candid analysis of the white working-class culture in crisis. The disintegration of this group—a slow process spanning more than forty years—has been widely discussed, but Vance brings a unique perspective, offering a deeply personal account of what it feels like to experience social, regional, and class decline from the inside. His story is one of personal struggle, shaped by the weight of generational poverty, abuse, alcoholism, and trauma.
The Vance family’s story begins with hope in postwar America. J.D.’s grandparents, “dirt poor and in love,” left Kentucky’s Appalachian region for Ohio, seeking a better life. They raised a middle-class family, and one of their grandchildren would eventually graduate from Yale Law School, achieving a dream of upward mobility. Yet, as the family saga unfolds in Hillbilly Elegy, we see how J.D.’s grandparents, aunt, uncle, and especially his mother, grappled with the challenges of their new middle-class life, struggling to escape the lingering shadows of their past. Through raw honesty, Vance reveals how he continues to carry the burden of his family’s chaotic history.
A poignant and sometimes humorous memoir, Hillbilly Elegy is not only the story of one man’s journey to upward mobility but also a sobering reflection on the erosion of the American Dream for a significant segment of the country.

A very readable book that provides good insights into the remote areas and social conditions of the USA. Pleasant and easy-to-read writing style. It is difficult to understand how such a thoughtful author can become a Trump supporter.

This story of the life of JD Vance is so powerful because he was so brave to write it. Hopefully it will bring changes to the depression and hopelessness that has gripped this part of America as well as other forgotten and ignored areas. Everyone should read it to understand how powerful love and Hillbilly stubbornness gave JD the spirit he has .

I’d recommend this book to anybody that want’s to know more about the new American Vice President.
It’s a ‘no holds barred’ account of the hillbilly culture and the challenges to overcome your environment and move forward in life.
One of the best books I’ve read for sure.
