Description
In the first volume of his presidential memoirs, A Promised Land, Barack Obama chronicles his extraordinary journey from a young man searching for his identity to becoming the 44th president of the United States. With striking personal insight, he explores his political education, the monumental events of his first term, and the challenges that shaped his leadership during one of the most transformative periods in American history.
Obama takes readers on a captivating journey—from his early political ambitions and the pivotal victory in the Iowa caucus to the historic night of November 4, 2008, when he was elected as the first African American president. Along the way, he provides rare and candid reflections on the power and limitations of the presidency, the intricacies of U.S. politics, and global diplomacy.
With unmatched access to his decision-making processes, Obama brings readers inside the White House, revealing intimate moments in the Oval Office and Situation Room, as well as key international moments in Moscow, Cairo, and Beijing. He shares the high-stakes negotiations to pass the Affordable Care Act, confronts the financial crisis, and responds to crises such as the Deepwater Horizon disaster. His recollection of authorizing the mission that led to Osama bin Laden’s death is a powerful testament to the weight of his decisions.
In this deeply introspective memoir, Obama reflects on his experiences as a Black American navigating the complexities of presidential campaigns, the weight of expectations, and the moral dilemmas inherent in leadership. He is open about the challenges and disappointments he faced while balancing his public life and personal sacrifices, particularly with his family.
The A Promised Land is a masterfully written and introspective story of one man’s journey through history. Obama’s belief in the power of democracy, built through empathy and shared understanding, remains unwavering as he recounts how he faced adversity and remained committed to the American ideal of progress.

It is very interesting to enter the world of such an important person, and that it is in such an enjoyable way; I recommend the English version, it provides a lot of useful vocabulary

Very good indeed and an easy read. He could have expanded also on some of the Administration’s flops like the Arab Spring and the non response to the annexation of Crimea, but it was nevertheless very interesting and well written.

I can’t even put into words how I feel after finishing this. It brought back so many memories and emotions. I ran the entire spectrum of emotions throughout this book. I will admit though that he also made me stop and think. I never gave much thought to all the decisions he had to make or what truly went into being president. I could feel the emotions in every word on the page and I truly believe not only is America better for having had such a strong leader, but I am better for having read this book. It’s one I’ll come back to again and again. Thank you Mr. President.
